Breast Augmentation
The main goal of breast augmentation is to increase the size of the breast either by using implants or by transferring fat from one area of your body to your breasts. Often, breast augmentation is used to correct asymmetry (when one breast is larger than the other). The volume of a saline implant can be easily adjusted during surgery to produce a balanced look. Augmentation can also be performed along with a breast lift. The two procedures are often used by women who have given birth to counter the volume loss and sagging that can result from pregnancy and breastfeeding.
The Procedure
Incisions for breast surgery are commonly made near the breast fold, in the natural underarm fold, or where the areola and regular breast skin meet. Your goals, body shape, and health history will determine what methods will be used for implant placement. Implants may be placed over or under the pectoral muscles. Scarring is usually minimal. Initial recovery is often 1-2 weeks, with most patients returning to basic daily activities within that time frame. The ability to engage in full exercise will usually occur within 6 weeks. The final results are usually evident at the 6-week time point.
