Breast Implant Exchange
Silicone gel and saline breast implants are intended to be long-lasting devices. But no breast implant can last a lifetime. Implant duration can vary by patient, and the reasons for wanting to exchange them can be wide-ranging. One of the most common reasons is an evolution in aesthetics. If you received your implants in your 20s, you might not want the same look now that you are in your late 30s or 40s. Your body may have changed due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, menopause, or age. On rare occasions, some may need to replace their implants due to complications (such as rupture), when the implant moves from its original position, or due to capsular contraction (when the protective tissue that your body develops around any foreign device can harden and cause pain or alter the shape of the implant).
The Procedure
The procedure to exchange your breast implants is often called “breast implant revision surgery.” Your recovery may be very similar to your original procedure, but can vary depending on the type of the new implant received. Your initial recovery period can last for a few weeks, during which your normal day-to-day activities may be restricted. After 6 weeks, most swelling decreases, and you can begin to see the final results.
